HEJ No. 16 - January 2006

Greetings Electronics Enthusiasts!

Each year, I have the pleasure of attending the tech conference that beats all conferences — CES, the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. While most of these new and cool gadgets just seem like a high-end excuse for companies to flex their tech muscles (unless, of course, you think an electronic robotic dog is a good idea), we were able to find a few real standouts at this year’s CES.

This issue of HEJ shows you the future in home electronics fresh off the showroom floor. We’re featuring three new products sure to be in high demand in the years ahead. Finally a trip to Vegas I can be proud of!

If anything’s going to give the almighty iPod a run for its money, it’s the Creative Zen Vision:M — the big talk of CES! In Quick Take, I’ll give you the scoop.

All the best,

Steven R. Mitchell

In This Issue: The Future is Now!!!

Sony VAIO XL2
Samsung Wi-Max M8000
LG's 50" Plasma TV

Quick Take: iPod Killer?

The Future is Now!!!

The Sony VAIO XL2 Digital Living System

Sony has improved its first crack at living room computers with the amazing new XL2. This “Digital Living System” now holds an Intel Pentium D 920 and a whopping 1GB of RAM. Two 160GB hard drives give you more room for recording favorite TV programs and ripping CDs. No S-Video or DVI connections this time, though you can use its HDMI-to-DVI adapter to connect to a standard LCD monitor. And for those with way too much free time on their hands, the XL2 comes with the prodigious 200-disc DVD changer standard.

Samsung's Mobile Wi-Max M8000

We got our first look at Samsung's mobile Wi-Max phone, the M8000, here at CES. Wi-Max technology provides broadband-like connections anytime, anywhere, and includes a broad range of converged services delivered from a single IP-based network.

This beast of a PDA offers a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and — through a series of different applications — can handle broadcasting, home networking, videoconferencing, video on demand, and more. Yeah, we know. We’re drooling, too.

LG's 50-inch 50PB2DR Plasma TV

Four words: Super Bowl on Plasma. Who hasn’t dreamed of it! This behemoth is sure to be a giant in the industry. (Pun intended.) The flagship 50-inch 50PB2DR Plasma TV from LG offers a pair of ATSC tuners as well as Digital Cable Ready CableCard compatibility, enabling viewers to watch one show while recording another without having to hook up an external cable box. TiVo, eat your heart out!

Quick Take

iPod killer? Could be. What Steve Jobs and his company have done with that little white box has revolutionized the world of MP3 players, and it certainly seems like they’re invincible. But Apple may get a run for its money with the Creative Zen Vision:M. This was the new product absolutely everyone was talking about this CES.

With its 2.5-inch screen and utterly gorgeous, brightly displayed 262,144 colors (the iPod is capable of displaying about 65,000), the Vision:M is a force to be reckoned with! Not to mention that this media powerhouse also delivers a voice recorder, subscription music, video support, simultaneous photo viewing, album art, music playback, and an FM tuner and recorder. Be sure to take a careful look at the Vision:M when it hits the market — before Apple thinks up its newest, greatest invention for the palm of your hand. But, for the time being, the first true challenger to the iPod has arrived!
